Dozens of animals that were evacuated from a wildlife rehabilitation center in Big Bear Lake due to one of California’s wildfires returned home Thursday morning.
Last week, the animals were transported from Big Bear Alpine Zoo, which specializes in the rehabilitation and release of native species in the area, to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, a partner facility in Palm Desert.
The evacuation was done as a precautionary measure due to the Line Fire burning in the mountains of San Bernardino County near the popular ski town.
Nearly 50 animals, including foxes, owls and other birds, were housed for the week at the nonprofit zoo located about two hours south of Big Bear Lake.
Mike Barnes, director of Animal Care and Health at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, said the staff was ready to immediately jump to the aid of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo.
“We drill for these kinds of scenarios regularly and our staff was prepared,” Barnes said. “During their time here, the animals were in excellent hands as our staff worked alongside Big Bear Alpine Zoo’s team to continue to administer top-notch care.”
Although being transported from familiar surroundings via car can be a stressful experience for animals in captivity, Barnes said the animals were able to maintain their routines while in their temporary homes.
“We’re happy to help them make their way home today, now that it’s safe for them to return,” he said.
