About the closure: The road has been closed from Limekiln State Park to Palo Colorado in Monterey County and in recent years rains have forced the closure of that particular stretch multiple times because of erosion and rocks washing onto the road. On March 30, a rockslide totally closed the southbound and about 6 feet of pavement and retaining wall fell into the ocean.
Why does that road close often: The Big Sur coastline is “a road builder’s nightmare,” said Dick Norris, a marine geologist at University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography who told LAist the road was built on highly unstable ground.
