A 19-year-old man was arrested after accidentally shooting himself during a confrontation in Camarillo over the weekend.
Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of Glenn Drive around 4 p.m. Saturday, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release on Wednesday.
During their investigation, deputies determined that the suspect, identified as Angel Barajas of Camarillo, had brandished a firearm at two victims during a verbal altercation.
“Several family members of the victim physically intervened, attempting to prevent Barajas from firing the handgun at the victim,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Ultimately, Barajas fired the handgun, striking himself in the lower torso.”
Deputies found Barajas being treated for injuries at a local hospital a short time later.
Investigators also discovered Barajas illegally had possession of the gun used in the assault during a search of his residence the next day.
Barajas was arrested on Sunday after being discharged from the hospital.
He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a deadly weapon and unlawful firearm transfer.
