A 20-year-old man from Perris is accused of calling in phony crimes to authorities, including reports of domestic violence, armed robberies and suspects carrying guns in public spaces.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrested Elvis Ponce on Wednesday on complaints for making false reports of crimes and emergencies, misusing a 911 emergency line and violating his probation.
According to Sheriff’s Department officials, the calls began on Feb. 23, 2023 and were centered around the city of Perris. Ponce allegedly made reports of armed robberies, gunshots heard, violent assaults, domestic violence and armed suspects.
Many of those calls resulted in a full law enforcement response with emergency lights and sirens and businesses or homes being surrounded.
Only after responding for those calls for service did authorities determine them to be fake.
The investigation was led by Riverside County Sheriff’s Department detectives station in Perris. It’s unclear how, but Ponce was eventually identified as a suspect in the case and arrested in a residential neighborhood.
He was booked into the Robert Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta where he was held on $5,000 bail and released Thursday, according to jail records.
He is scheduled to appear in court and face four misdemeanor charges on Aug. 9.
This investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information about the case is urged to call Investigator Lee at Riverside County Sheriff’s dispatch at 951-776–1099.
