Three men were injured Friday, one fatally, when a car crashed off Interstate 805 in the South Bay, authorities reported.
The northbound Toyota Corolla veered off the freeway north of Telegraph Canyon Road in Chula Vista, struck a concrete pillar and caught fire at about 6:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
One of the three occupants of the sedan, Matthew Mitiku, a 23-year-old Newark resident, died at the scene of the wreck, said CHP public-affairs Officer Salvador Castro.
Paramedics took an Oakland man, 24, who had been driving the car, and a second passenger, 50, to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The cause of the accident was unclear, but intoxication was not believed to be a factor, Castro said
ED note: A previous version of this story stated the driver died when it was the passenger.
