ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Evacuation warnings were in place in Orange and Riverside counties after a fire, being called the “Airport Fire,” broke out in Trabuco Canyon.
Investigators said the fire was unintentionally set by a public works employee when the fire broke out on Monday, Sept. 9, just before 1:30 p.m.
In an update Tuesday morning, authorities said the fire has burned over 9,000 acres with no containment. Firefighters were focusing their efforts on the area around Ortega Highway, as authorities said the fire was burning south and east of the roadway.
The fire was further fueled by heat and winds amid a late summer heat wave. Fire crews in Southern California have their hands tied with multiple wildfires burning across the region.
