A woman was assaulted and robbed near Langer’s Deli on Friday, a historic restaurant whose owner has threatened to close it due to ongoing safety issues in the area.
The robbery occurred around 2 p.m. in the 700 block of South Alvarado Street.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the victim was on her way to visit her daughter at a store when she was confronted by a man who grabbed her necklace.
The victim fought back, and both fell to the ground, police said. Her attacker eventually ran off with the necklace.
Immediately after the attack, the woman ran into Langer’s Deli to seek help and call the police. A customer took a photo of the chaos and later shared it on social media.
Despite initial reports, police said the robbery did not occur inside the deli.
Norm Langer, the owner of the 77-year-old restaurant, says he may close it due to public safety issues and homelessness in the Westlake neighborhood.
On Tuesday, Langer met with Mayor Karen Bass to discuss his concerns and learn about the city’s efforts to clean up the area.
“Supporting local businesses like Langers is a top priority, not just through direct aid and resources but also through addressing homelessness and crime … Urgent action on all fronts will continue,” Deputy Mayor Zach Seidl said this week.
